Il en a profité, sur invitation de Mamadou Koumé, pour rencontrer les étudiants de la 3e année (spécialisation presse écrite) et se prononcer sur diverses questions.

Quel sentiment vous anime en franchissant les portes du CESTI, 30 ans après ?

J’ai la fierté de constater que l’établissement tient toujours bon, il se développe. Nous avions beaucoup d’inquiétudes quand les Français et les Canadiens se sont retirés. Certains avaient pensé que cela allait péricliter, mais je me réjouis de constater que ce n’est pas le cas. Le CESTI reste une école prestigieuse qui a formé l’essentiel des journalistes africains. Je souhaite que le CESTI quitte ses locaux actuels pour avoir un siège beaucoup plus digne de son standing.

De la Mauritanie, comment avez-vous vécu la situation pré-électorale tendue au Sénégal ?

Nous étions inquiets parce que la démocratie sénégalaise est un exemple en Afrique. Si cette élection avait connue une tournure malheureuse, cela aurait été vraiment dommage non seulement pour le Sénégal mais aussi pour toute la sous-région. Mais nous rendons grâce à Dieu puis que tout s’est bien déroulé et qu’une nouvelle alternance s’est réalisée.

L’actualité, c’est le renvoi de la Mauritanie de centaines d’étrangers dont de nombreux ressortissants sénégalais. Qu’est ce qui explique ces expulsions ?

Je pense que c’est lié à ce qu’on appelle « l’enrôlement ». La Mauritanie est en train d’identifier tous les résidents qu’ils soient nationaux ou étrangers. C’est certainement dans ce cadre. C’est sans doute ceux qui ne sont pas en situation régulière, c’est-à-dire ceux qui n’ont pas un contrat de travail, qui sont expulsés.

Dans un contexte d’échange et de libre circulation entre les pays, est ce que ce n’est pas là une mauvaise publicité pour la Mauritanie ?

Naturellement. Mais vous savez, chaque pays à sa politique. On ne peut pas empêcher à un pays d’assainir sa situation démographique. Je reste persuadé que ce n’est pas pour le plaisir d’expulser que ces mesures ont été prises mais elles obéissent à mon avis, à une volonté de se faire une idée exacte de la situation démographique en Mauritanie.

Quelle est la situation politique de la Mauritanie aujourd’hui ?

La situation politique est stable. Le régime a fait des avancées mais il y a beaucoup de choses à faire. Toutefois la situation politique est actuellement bloquée parce que l’opposition n’arrive pas à conjuguer avec le régime en place. C’est un peu tendu mais il y a des bonnes volontés qui sont en train d’essayer de décanter la situation pour qu’on puisse aller aux élections législatives qui ont été reportées.

Où en êtes vous avec la lutte contre la ségrégation raciale et l’esclavagisme en Mauritanie dont vous êtes l’une des figures de proue ?

La lutte continue. On n’a pas encore eu ce qu’on veut. La situation reste toujours la même, la question nationale n’est pas encore réglée. Il y a des communautés qui sont encore marginalisées en Mauritanie. L’esclavage aussi continue à perdurer même s’il y a des lois qui sont votées timidement pour l’interdire.
